When You Say Nothing At All
One of my favorite songs by Alison Krauss is "When You Say Nothing At All". It is definitely a love song, but the title came to my mind because it seems to fit an unfortunate family situation that has been going on in my family for a number of years and it has nothing to do with a love affair, but everything to do with how sometimes family bonds are split apart, and relationships die, because nothing was said.
I am not going to go into the details, but it was a pretty serious and significant situation that occurred many years ago. The wounds have not healed and the rifts are still uppermost in the minds of those that were affected. There are many family members that hope that this situation will be resolved, and I am one of them. I try to be objective and not choose sides, but what bothers me most are the things that have been left unsaid. There are things that should have been addressed many years ago but never were, and many think that the passage of time is enough...but, it's not. Apologies and explanations need to be made and with the enormous amount of time that has passed, those words that should have been said many years ago, are now harder and more difficult to say. When things are swept under the rug, and when you say nothing at all, nothing changes, and the bitterness and pain continues. With the passage of time, the rug is a lot dirtier and the crap is still under there.
It would have been easier many years ago, to have said the things that needed to be said, but it is what it is, and you can't backtrack. Why is it so hard for us to talk and get the crap under the rug cleaned up and thrown away, so we can move forward?
